My spouse is putting pressure on me to let his mother live with us.

Having an unwanted family member in the house can make it hard to keep the peace. Clara wrote to us online to ask for help because her husband wants his mother to move in, but Clara doesn’t think it will be a good idea because she thinks it will make their home less peaceful. Clara was in a tough spot after her husband gave her an ultimatum.

This letter is from Clara:

My mother-in-law lost her husband not long ago. My husband wants her to move in with us because he is her only son. She is nosy, talks down to me, and hates my two kids who aren’t her son’s.

I told her I didn’t want her to live with me. “Well, if you don’t accept, then tell your mother she’s not welcome to come to dinner three days a week!” my angry husband said.

He then said, “Also, your mother is not allowed to leave her things in our guest room,” which scared me. Even though she doesn’t live with us, having all of her things around the house makes it feel like she does.

These words broke my heart. My mom does visit often, but she never lived with us. And most importantly, my mom isn’t a bother like his mom is. My mom is nice, always willing to help, and makes our family feel good. This is not like my mother-in-law at all.

This makes me think that my husband is forcing me to let his mom live with us, and I can’t stand it.

What should I do?

Thanks, Clara
