My Husband Was Silent When His Mother Was Berating Me and Insulting Our Child

For most people, relationships with in-laws are real challenges. Constant fights with them can put a strain on even the strongest marriages. One woman was shocked to find out what her MIL really thinks of her. What’s worse, her husband also heard it and his response made our reader reconsider her marriage. She shared her story online.

My husband and I adopted an infant 4 years ago due to fertility issues. We accepted our daughter as our own from the first day we brought her home.

I don’t have a great relationship with my MIL. It’s impossible to find any common ground with her. We decided not to tell her that our daughter was adopted.

She came to babysit our daughter, and we went out of town. When we came back, she was hysterical. She was shouting at me and calling me names waving our daughter’s adoption certificate in front of my face. Apparently, she’d found out everything.
She called me a useless disappointment and shouted, “Why did my boy even marry you?”. Our scared and confused daughter came into the room and gave her a toy. My MIL looked at her with disgust, threw the toy on the floor, and quickly moved our daughter toward me. She said, “Get THIS away from me. A stray kitten would have been better.”

I was furious! I shouted at my MIL and pushed her out of the house. My husband didn’t even say a word to his mother. I asked him why he was silent. He replied, “I respect my mother too much.” I was speechless.
