This is much more dangerous than it looks…

Did you know that a simple piece of tape on a speed limit sign can trick Tesla cars into dangerously high speeds? Recent findings have revealed that even a small modification like this can cause Tesla’s new models to misread the speed limit and accelerate to alarming velocities.

In an experiment conducted by McAfee researchers, a two-inch piece of electrical tape was placed across the middle of the number “3” on a speed limit sign. Astonishingly, this manipulation tricked a Tesla Model X from 2016 into misinterpreting the speed limit as 85 miles per hour, resulting in the car accelerating from a limit of 35 miles per hour to an alarming 85 miles per hour.

This flaw in Tesla’s technology is particularly concerning as it has led to 110 crashes and 52 injuries. Tesla owners, who have invested significantly in their vehicles, are being put in dangerous situations due to the oversight in ensuring driver safety while using cruise control.

Even more alarming is the fact that this issue occurs even when the car is not in autonomous mode. The McAfee experiment demonstrated that a simple modification, like adding electrical tape to a speed limit sign, can pose a significant risk to the driver.

Tesla argues that McAfee’s study is not valid since it involved an intentional act to manipulate the computer camera. However, should this research be dismissed? Should Tesla take steps to prevent people from tricking their technology?

According to McAfee, the modified sign does not raise suspicion or appear malicious, even to the trained eye. Many who saw it did not realize it had been tampered with at all. This highlights the importance of addressing this vulnerability in Tesla’s technology.

If you ever come across a road sign with a piece of tape similar to what was used in the experiment, it is crucial to call 911 right away. This simple act can help prevent potential accidents and ensure the safety of yourself and other drivers on the road.
