HE CRAWLED INTO MY LAP MID-FLIGHT—AND NO ONE CAME TO CLAIM HIM

At first, I didn’t even notice him.

Trying to ignore the turbulence and the man next to me who kept letting out a loud sigh whenever I moved, I was halfway through my audiobook. A little hand then tugged at my sleeve. This young youngster, who might have been three or four years old, just stood in the aisle with his eyes wide and appeared to have been crying.
He scudded straight into my lap before I could say anything. As if he recognized me, he curled up. As if he had already done it.

I went cold.

Everyone in our vicinity looked over, but no one spoke. The flight attendant passed by, gave him a nice smile, and continued on. I was at a loss for what to do. My initial reaction was to inquire about his parents’ whereabouts, but he had already snuggled his head under my arm and was breathing slowly as if he was at last secure.

I looked about us in the rows, expecting for someone to say something. However, nothing.

I kept him in my arms the entire flight. Nobody came to get him. Not a word. Don’t panic. Just silence.

I eventually asked the woman across the aisle if she knew where his parents were once we touched down and everyone got up to grab their bags.

She said, “I thought you were his mom,” blinking at me.

The pit in my gut really began to develop at that point.

I glanced down at the young youngster, who was wiping his eyes and now waking up. He had a slight, drowsy smile on his face as he gazed up at me. His voice was still heavy with sleep as he muttered, “Are we there yet?”

“We are,” I said, my thoughts racing. “My dear, what is your name?”

He yawned and snuggled back into my side after saying, “Finn.”

“Finn,” I said again. “Are you aware of the location of your parents?”

His forehead wrinkled a little as he shook his head. “They used to be here.”

Panic began to take hold. What if a toddler just got lost on an airplane? Where had his parents gone? How come no one had noticed his absence?

As we disembarked, I informed the flight attendant. She appeared startled but unconcerned. Though her tone lacked conviction, she offered, “Perhaps they got separated in the rush to get off?”

After what seemed like an eternity of waiting at the gate, nobody came looking for Finn. I gripped his hand hard as a weird wave of dread and protectiveness passed over me.

Airport security eventually intervened. They asked Finn a few questions, but he was only able to provide them with the fact that his father was “big” and his mother had blonde hair. They sent a description and his name over the intercom, but no one answered.

Hours went by. Unexpectedly composed, Finn drew designs on a coffee shop napkin while periodically requesting “juice.” He had picked my lap as his safe haven for no apparent reason, and it seemed as though he trusted me to look after him.

Although overworked, the airport staff was friendly. They informed me that in the event that no one came forward right away, they would have to get in touch with child protective services. I was devastated by the idea of this adorable youngster being placed in the system.

“Is it possible for me to remain with him until his parents are located?” Before I could stop myself, the question escaped my lips.

The security guard’s eyes were slightly sympathetic as he gazed at me. “We have procedures to follow, ma’am, but we appreciate your willingness to help.”

A woman with a pale, tear-streaked face hurried towards us just as I was beginning to feel totally powerless. “Finn! Finn, oh my god!

His mother was the one. Sobbing hysterically, she raced to him, fell on her knees, and pulled him into a close embrace. “Where did you go? I was really anxious!

A great sense of relief swept over me. I was really happy that he was back with his mother and secure. However, a weird sensation tore at me as I watched them get back together. There was a problem.

His mother’s eyes, still swollen and red, peered up at me. She said, “Thank you,” in a passionate voice. “I appreciate you looking after him.”

I forced a smile and responded, “Of course.”

Then a man with a worried expression came up. “What took place? What brought him all the way here?

Finn did not resemble this man at all. He had dark hair, was tall, and had a severe face.

Finn’s mother introduced him by saying, “This is my husband, David.”

David’s expression was one of bewilderment as he glanced at Finn and then at his wife. However, I believed he was with you.

It dawned on me then. It was only now that they became aware that Finn was missing. They weren’t trying to find him. They weren’t concerned.

The relief I had experienced seconds earlier was replaced by a hard, chilly knot of rage in my stomach. Why were they so irresponsible? How could they spend hours in the dark about the whereabouts of their own child?

Later that night, the twist was revealed. The picture of Finn climbing into my lap and clinging to me as if I were his lifeline kept coming back to me. To check in, I dialed the child protective services number the security guard had provided.

Although she was reluctant to provide me any specifics, the social worker I met with acknowledged that they were investigating the matter. It seems that Finn’s parents had given contradictory accounts of who was meant to be keeping an eye on him while he was flying. Other warning signs that she was unable to reveal were also present.

I kept thinking about Finn as the days stretched into weeks. Even I was taken aback by the sudden bond I felt with him and the intense protectiveness I had.

Then I received a call. The social worker was the one. She informed me that following their assessment, they had determined that Finn’s custody with his parents was unsafe. They were trying to find him a short-term foster home.

A beat skipped in my chest. I blurted out, “Can I… can I be his foster parent?” without giving it any thought.

The person on the other end of the line paused. She said, “You’re a single woman,” with caution. “You just met him, too.”

“I understand,” I responded in a beseeching tone. However, he needs a companion. Additionally, I Even though it will only be for a short time, I believe I can provide him with a decent home.

It required a lot of paperwork, a home study, and some persuasion. However, a week later, Finn arrived at my house holding a tiny duffel bag. His large brown eyes were full of both hope and trepidation as he gazed up at me.

“Hello,” he murmured.

I knelt to his level and said, “Hello Finn.” “Hello, welcome home.”

The happy ending wasn’t a narrative of my becoming a flawless mom overnight. It was the gradual, untidy, and lovely process of developing a relationship with this young guy who had unexpectedly entered my life while flying. There were difficulties, restless nights, and periods of uncertainty. However, there was also a great deal of love, laughter, and the deep fulfillment that came from providing him with a secure and caring environment.

For six months, Finn lived with me. Eventually, his parents pulled themselves together, sought therapy, and demonstrated to the authorities that they could give him a secure home. One of the most difficult things I’ve ever had to do was say goodbye. However, I was aware that I had provided him with a safe haven during a trying moment, and that was sufficient.

The lesson here is that life can sometimes take us by surprise and put us in circumstances we never would have thought possible. However, even in those situations, there is a chance to change things, to show compassion and love to someone in need. And occasionally, such unforeseen relationships have the power to significantly and meaningfully alter our lives.
