When my mother-in-law insisted on stepping on me while I was using the restroom, I came up with a novel solution.

It’s not always easy to live with your in-laws. On Reddit, one woman talked about a strange habit her mother-in-law had that was making her nervous. Her mother-in-law would walk in on her every time she went to the bathroom, which made her mad. This led to a conversation about how important it is to have personal space and set limits when living with someone else.

What took place…

By the way, I’m a girl. My MIL came to stay with us for a few weeks while her house is being fixed up. What’s wrong is that she keeps coming in on me while I’m in the bathroom. Thank goodness she hasn’t seen me naked yet, because after the second time in a week, I started to notice how she was acting.

She would rush in, say “sorry,” turn around, and shut the door. I tried to talk to my husband about it, but he ignored me and then said, “So what if she saw you naked by accident?” It’s family! He really said that!

Because my brother locked me in the bathroom when I was 5, I’m afraid of being locked in a room. We have a lock, and I could have used it.

That’s how I got this idea. I would lie about using the bathroom and wait for her to come in (because really? It’s done on purpose at this point). It would look weird to her when she “accidentally” walked in. Like when I do a ballet stand, stand on the toilet, or face the wall with my hands up, all while wearing clothes.

I could tell this would be weird and awkward for her because she would stand there for a second and try to figure out what I was doing. At first, seeing how confused she was was funny, but she later told my husband that “she caught me practicing rituals in the bathroom.” I set the record straight and told you why.

My husband told his mom that I was acting like a child and that it made her feel “terrified.” He told me I should have been grown up and locked the door instead of messing around.

Both my husband and his mom are very mad at me. Still, he thinks it was silly, and he wants her to say sorry before she goes home. I’m not sure if I will say sorry. Even though the fact that I couldn’t use the lock was “me” fault, what she did is still wrong. Sure, I could be wrong too, but at least it made me laugh.
