I’m Astonished by My Fiancé’s Plans for My Inheritance

A woman going through a rough patch in her five-year relationship looked for support in online forums. She questioned whether it was right for her to stand her ground against the man she loves after getting into a heated argument with her fiancé about money.

It was only a year ago that I got engaged to my partner, a 35-year-old man. We plan to get married in May 2025 after being together for five years.

Sadly, my nanna passed away a few weeks after we got engaged. Throughout their lives, she and my grandfather had put in a great deal of work, which had led to their success and financial security. They were thrifty when they were younger, which helped them to amass substantial fortune later in life. In particular, my grandfather is incredibly smart and adept at handling finances and investments.

My grandmother bequeathed an extraordinarily large sum of money to my brother, me, and my three cousins in her will. We all took home a good chunk of cash, even after splitting it. I would rather not say how much exactly.

I told my fiancé the news, and to my surprise, he seemed much more excited than I had thought. I dismissed it, but the following day, while he was playing video games with his pals, I heard him say, “I can pay my credit card off with that money, mate!” We can now finally take the boys’ vacation we’ve been arranging!

When I entered the room, I enquired, “What money?” With a strange look on his face, he said, “From your nan, babe.” That’s when I snapped. I made it clear to him that there would be no boys’ vacation and that he could not use any of the money without my approval. The money is specifically designated for me by MY grandmother; it is not yours to claim. It is not debatable.

The exchange of harsh words and raised voices marked the rapid escalation of our argument. I became enraged and frustrated, so I stormed from the room. Later on, he ended his game session to come face to face with me in the kitchen. He implied that my money would automatically become his after we were married and accused me of embarrassing him in front of his friends.

I didn’t suggest taking a vacation, and his presumption that I would be expensive is unfounded given my reliable employment and lack of child-rearing intentions. I couldn’t take the stress any longer, so I left the house without saying anything more and took sanctuary at a friend’s house, where I am now writing this.

This altercation just happened, I should say. Due to numerous family and legal issues, I wasn’t even sure if I would get the inheritance until recently. Am I the one who is at fault here?
